The Power of Routine in Early Childhood (Even During Summer!)

Routine in Early Childhood

Summer might be all about sunshine, sprinklers, and popsicles, but if you’ve ever noticed your child acting out more during these months, you’re not imagining it.

Summer brings a lot of changes like new schedules, vacations, later bedtimes, and while that can be fun, it can also feel a little chaotic for young children. That’s where routine in early childhood comes in.

As early childhood educators, we’ve seen time and time again how kids thrive when they know what to expect. Routine helps them feel safe, confident, and in control of their day, even when everything around them is changing.

Why Routines Matter (Yes, Even in the Summer)

Children don’t always have the words to express how they’re feeling, but their behavior often tells the story. When their world feels unpredictable, they might become more emotional, more defiant, or just plain overwhelmed. Routine acts as an anchor because it helps them feel steady.

A predictable schedule:

✔️ Reduces anxiety

✔️ Encourages independence

✔️ Helps regulate emotions

✔️ Makes transitions smoother (for you and them)

What Routine Looks Like in Summer

We’re not talking about rigid, minute-by-minute schedules. Summer routines can (and should!) be more relaxed, but still consistent. Think about:

  • Morning routines: A predictable start to the day sets the tone. Even something simple like “wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast” can work wonders.

  • Meal and snack times: Keeping these consistent helps with energy and mood (and cuts down on “hangry” outbursts).

  • Nap or quiet time: Even if your child is phasing out of naps, quiet rest time in the afternoon helps reset their nervous system.

  • Evening wind-down: A familiar bedtime routine: bath, book, cuddle, sleep, helps kids fall asleep faster and sleep better, even after an exciting day.

How We Support Routine at Our Center

At Murtis Taylor Child Enrichment Centers, we build our days around gentle, age-appropriate routines that balance learning and play. From structured group time to free play, from snack time to story time, our daily rhythm helps children feel grounded, even when summer energy is high.

We know children feel safest when they know what comes next and we’re here to give them that sense of security while still making every day fun and full of discovery.

If you’re navigating summer chaos at home, you’re not alone. Try adding a few gentle routines into your child’s day, and see how it helps bring a little more calm and a lot more confidence.

And if you’re looking for a summer program where structure meets play, we’d love to welcome your family.

Let’s make this summer joyful and balanced.
